Suehiro Sushi, a Grand Junction Gem
Suehiro Japanese Restaurant & Sushi is one of Grand Junction’s most well-known and favored establishments. This locally owned, family-run establishment has been serving up delicious sushi and Japanese cuisine since 1989. Owned by Sumiko (Sumi) Boyd, originally from Okinawa, Japan, the restaurant is now run by her son Steve. Fun fact: Tyler and his wife, Lauren, personally know Steve and his wife, Gussie!
Finding Suehiro
Suehiro is located downtown between 5th and 6th on Main. As Grand Junction’s oldest sushi restaurant, it’s well-known and easy to find whether you’re strolling around town or searching online.
What We Ordered
Tyler and Dani have their favorites, and they stick to them! Their go-to dishes are the Poison Ivy roll, KA roll, and Dynamite Shrimp. They say, “No matter what you order, you can’t go wrong!”
The Atmosphere
Not much has changed since the restaurant opened in 1986, remaining simple and inviting. There are a few horigotatsu tables (low tables with a recessed floor beneath) in a tatami area (traditional Japanese flooring), as well as regular tables and a bar. It’s great for date nights, happy hour, or special occasions. They’re also open for lunch if you want to avoid the dinner crowds.
A Family Feeling
One of the things that sets Suehiro apart is the warmth and friendliness of the staff. Steve, the owner, is known for giving out lots of hugs to customers! It’s clear that they truly care about their patrons and want everyone to feel welcome.
Overall
We always have a great time at Suehiro. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the service is top-notch. If you’re looking for delicious sushi and Japanese cuisine, Suehiro is definitely worth a visit!
